Frances passed away Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Care Center. As was her wish, her body has been cremated. A Family Memorial Service will be held at the Monroe Care Center.

Frances Eleanor Kennedy, daughter of George Elmer and Lucy Maude Hoskins Gilchrist, was born October 18, 1918 in Barnes City, Iowa. She was a 1936 graduate of Barnes City High School. She furthered her education at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Ottumwa. November 8, 1941, she was united in marriage to Merle Harvey Kennedy in Oskaloosa, Iowa; where they made their home and raised their family. That same year, she started her career as a nurse at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. For the next forty years, Frances dedicated herself to raising her family and serving the Oskaloosa area residents at the hospital. Frances will be long remembered as the face of the Obstetrics Department at Mahaska Hospital; under her watchful eye countless babies were delivered. Frances retired from nursing in 1981. Frances and Merle enjoyed wintering in Arizona for several years. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing and traveling. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. In 2004, Frances moved to the Monroe Care Center in Albia.

Her family includes her husband, Merle of Albia; two daughters: Dianne Burns of Oskaloosa and Susan (Norman) Frank of Hudson, IL; a son, David (Gini) Kennedy of Washington, DC; five grandchildren; two sisters: Ellen Carl of Albia, IA and Mary Freeman of Seattle, WA; and two brothers: John (Betty) Gilchrist of Seattle, WA and Don (Fern) Gilchrist of Ft. Thomas, KY.

Besides her parents, Frances was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Patricia Merle Kennedy; two sisters: Marjorie Bussey and Joan Dvorak; and three brothers: George, Bob and Dean Gilchrist.

Memorials may be made to the Monroe Care Center or to the Mahaska Hospital Obstetrics Department.
