Visitation: Will begin at 11:00 am, Sunday morning, December 27, 2009 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be at the funeral chapel from 4 to 6 pm to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 2 pm, Monday afternoon, December 28, 2009 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Reverend Michael Omundson of the First Christian Church officiating.
Interment: Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa

Darlene died Tuesday evening at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 10 days.

Darlene Gail Hamilton was born September 12, 1923 seven miles south of Barnes City at the rural home of her parents, John & Laura Lawrence Fry. She attended Barnes City schools and Oskaloosa schools. She married Cliff Van Ekeren September 30, 1944. He died July 29, 1954. She worked in her parents’ Just Rite Sandwich Shop from 1932 to 1942. She later worked at Don & Genes Maid-Rite, Pat & Molly’s Lunch, Downing Hotel coffee shop, Abie & Eva’s Diner, Ideal Mfg. Company, General Mills and Irving Hotel Bus Depot & Western Union. She married Audrey F. Hamilton September 12, 1971. He passed away October 14, 2003. She was an active member of the First Christian Church and the Mahaska Hospice Auxiliary. Darlene was active in the American Legion Auxiliary at the local, county and district levels; she was a past president of the local auxiliary and chaired the Auxiliary Juniors for eleven years; she was also a member of the Lady Eagles and the Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and family genealogy.

Darlene’s family includes a son, Dan (Barb) Van Ekeren of Rapid City, South Dakota; a granddaughter, Audra Jane Van Ekeren at home; two nephews, Roger Jones of Broken Bow, OK and Wavern Riggs of Littleton, CO; stepchildren: Linda (Chester) Janousek of Penrose, CO and Joe (Felita) Hamilton of Canon City, CO; and eleven step grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of cousins and friends.

Besides her husbands, Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen Fry Jones and Alveta Fry Herring; and two nephews, an infant nephew and Maynard Riggs.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund or the Iowa Chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
