Velda passed away Sunday morning at her home in Oskaloosa at the age of 89 years and 6 days. |
Velda Mae Van Zee, daughter of Ross and Sadie McNeal Klinker, was born December 21, 1920, in Union Mills, Iowa. Velda started school in Searsboro, before transferring to New Sharon School. As a young woman, she worked at the Phelps and Beal Grocery Stores in New Sharon. She was a 1938 graduate of New Sharon High School. She married Paul Van Zee in New Sharon on December 24, 1939. They made their home in Oskaloosa and Velda was the bookkeeper at Van Zee Motors. A business they owned and operated for over 50 years. After the business was sold in 1992, she worked at Donna’s Cafe, which later became Wes’ Café, until her retirement in 2004.
Velda was a charter member of the New Sharon Assembly of God and a member of the First Assembly of God in Oskaloosa. She and Paul owned several race cars and enjoyed car racing over the years. She also enjoyed vacations with family and just spending time with family.

Velda’s family includes her son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Virgie Van Zee of Oskaloosa; a grandson, Rick and Virginia Van Zee of Des Moines; a granddaughter, Marlys (Slade) Speers of Monroe; three great-grandsons: Dalton and Sheldon Speers, and Malik James and one great-grandaughter, Crystal Van Zee; three sisters-in-law: Nell Ver Beek of Montezuma, Artie Fick of Callender, Iowa, and Mildred Van Zee of Oskaloosa; and one brother-in-law, Earl “Mike” Van Zee of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews. |
Besides her parents, Velda was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on May 21, 1990; a brother, Harold Klinker; a half brother, Osa Colins and a half sister, Elsie Burggraaf. |
Memorials may be made to Rose Hill Community Church, Mahaska Hospice or First Assembly of God. |
