Visitation: Will begin at 10:00 a.m, Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be at the funeral chapel from noon to 3:00 p.m. Sunday to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 11, 2010 at First Assembly of God in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma of the Good News Chapel and Reverend Michael Dotson of the Assembly of God officiating.
Interment: Highland Cemetery near Eddyville

Amy passed away suddenly at the Univeristy of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, She was 34 years, 7 months and 30 days of age. Memorials may be made in her name.

Amy Lynn Hughes Pettyjohn, daughter of Howard and Bettie Thomas Hughes, was born May 6, 1975 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She attended Oskaloosa schools and was a 1993 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. She married Larry Pettyjohn on July 24, 1998; they made their home in Beacon. Through the years Amy worked several jobs including: Dairy Queen, Breadeaux Pizza, Iowa Trust and Savings Bank, Big Ed’s Barbeque and Pella Plastics. She furthered her education at Indian Hills Community College and graduated in 2005 as a registered nurse. She started her nursing career at the Knoxville Hospital; most recently she assisted as a substitute nurse at the Oskaloosa Elementary School and worked part-time for Dr. Dennis-Smithart. Amy was excited to have completed training for tax preparation and was ready to begin employment at H & R Block.

Amy loved spending time with her nieces and nephews and was willing to help anytime her sisters needed her. She had a love for John Deere Tractors and Mickey Mouse. Amy dreamed of owning a horse from the time she was very little and was excited to have her dream come true when they added Cinnamon to the family. She enjoyed fishing, riding four-wheelers and camping down at her cabin on the river. Her other favorite pastimes included scratch-off tickets and going to the casino with her Grandma Thomas. Family was always the most important thing in Amy’s life; her children were her entire world.

Her family includes her husband Larry of Beacon; her children: Morgan, Awstin and Shelbie; her mother and dad, Bill and Bettie Brendlinger of Iowa City; her father-in-law, Larry Pettyjohn of Hamilton, Iowa; five sisters: Jodie Keasling and Anne Schimke of Ainsworth, Laura Hughes & Chris Mickels of Fairfield; Randi Jo & Denny O’Leary of Ottumwa and Carrie Vander Ecken of Oskaloosa; her nieces and nephews: Ashlie and Tara Keasling, Micayla & Brayden Wald, Seth, Gabe & Kaidyn Mickels, and Brinden & Taryn O’Leary; grandparents: Joyce Thomas of Beacon and Bill & Phyllis Hughes of Eddyville and her uncles: Rich Thomas and Jim, Paul & Phil Hughes; as well as many more family and friends.

Besides her father, Howard Hughes, Amy was preceded in death by her grandparents: Dick Thomas and Bill and Jody Brendlinger; her mother-in-law, Karen Pettyjohn and her cousins: Danny Thomas, Jackie Hughes, Mike Evans and Angel VerPloegh.
